Our Teacher Institute is an intensive, paid, five-day academic program for third grade teachers of all subject areas. The Institute provides opportunities to create an equitable classroom filled with critically engaged students through object-based, arts-integrated teaching strategies.
The 2022 Summer Teacher Institute presents Connecting Cultures. Focusing on the Museum’s ongoing reinstallation of our Arts of Asia galleries—and expanding on the recently completed Arts of China Teaching Toolkit—teachers will learn to integrate best practices for museum and art education and contribute to new resources for classroom teachers to support third grade “Communities around the World” curricula. Develop lesson plans and design classroom activities that build students’ skills in analyzing, interpreting, and responding to sociopolitical issues through works of art, with a particular emphasis on supporting students’ explorations across cultures and time periods. Combining art-making, literacy in the visual arts, and interaction with Museum professionals, this course illuminates the possibilities for leveraging works of art to support student achievement across subject areas.
Individuals who complete the Summer Teacher Institute will have the opportunity for their third grade classes to participate in free programming highlighting the Museum’s East Asian art collections, and will receive early access to new curricular resources. Selected teachers will also receive a $1,000 stipend for successfully completing the 2022 Summer Teacher Institute.
Applications are due by Friday, May 20, 2022, and will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Apply today!
